How The Automatic Horse Waterers Work

Bar-Bar-A Horse and Livestock Drinkers work like a frost-free hydrant but are designed for animals. 

How It Works:

  • The horse steps on the paddle, allowing water to come out.
  • After drinking, the remaining water drains back into the ground, leaving an empty bowl.

There is no more water left behind to freeze or get hot in the summer! No more problems with algae growth and mosquito eggs. With no mosquito attraction, West Nile and Zika Virus problems can be reduced, and the standing water which becomes the breeding ground for rodents, birds, and disease is no longer an issue!

How Do You Install Automatic Horse Waterers?

Installation is relatively easy; use our horse waterer installation guide to get started today! Supplies you need include:

  • Gravel for drain field
  • Fittings to connect the waterline with our ½ inch poly pipe
  • 18” i.d. Pipe sleeve to encase the drinker
  • Swing Pipe Adaptor (can be the ones used for sprinklers or irrigation)
  • Tar paper to cover the drain field, or landscaping to cover it to prevent soil contamination
  • 2-5 tires (ONLY needed for extreme climates, and must have drinker installed deeper than 3 feet)
  • Bubble foil insulation to wrap pipe sleeves 2-3 times (Needed for harsh environments)

It is crucial to know the connection needs to be made outside the unit, not underneath.

How Many Animals Need To Drink To Keep The Automatic Waterers From Freezing?

Unlike similar products, the Bar-Bar-A automatic horse waterer does not need any animals drinking from it to keep it from freezing. Our unit is designed to provide freshwater for up to 25 horses. A horse will consume 5-10 gallons of fresh water daily. Depending upon the number of horses you have, contact our team for bulk ordering needs.

The Automatic Waterers Are Self-Cleaning

With no standing water, the opportunity for algae to grow is non-existent. This means there is no weekly cleaning associated with this product, making it the best automatic horse waterer!

1 – Paddle:

The animal’s nose naturally brushes against the paddle, triggering the supply valve to open … filling the water bowl.

2 – Black Drinker Top:

Made from tough cross-link polyethylene material that is UV safe.

3 – Water Bowl:

The water bowl fills with water and then automatically drains. No stagnant water to freeze or grow algae.

4 – Supply Pipe:

Fills the water bowl and then drains the excess water back into the drain field.

5 – Cross-Link Well Casing:

Tough cross-link well reaches below the frost line to house water supply, valve, and insulator.

For severe climates, the drinker comes with an insulator which keeps freezing air from reaching the supply line and valve.

The valve is below frontline to prevent freezing.

Automatic Waterers Physical Properties

  • All units are 5 feet in length and buried in the ground 3-3 ½ feet.  
  • At the base of the unit, a water source is connected with the drinker’s waterline (1/2 inch polypipe).
  • This is the coiled line that you see in the diagram below.
  • The reason for the coiled line is so the inner workings can be pulled up to ground level for maintenance. 
  • The unit does not need to be dug up for service.

Training Animals To Drink From The Automatic Waterers

Training horses to drink from the Bar-Bar-A is easy. Following installation remove all other water sources. Lead your horse over to the unit and push on the paddle. Rub some water on the nose and then get out of the way. Horses are typically curious and it takes about an hour for them to figure the automatic horse waterer out. 

For cattle and other animals place a bucket of water next to the automatic waterer. This trains the animal to go to the Drinker for water.  After a few days remove the bucket from the area. 

It generally takes 6-12 hours for cattle and other animals to learn to use the drinker. For animals needing extra help, the unit has a training mode that can be implemented for training purposes (in the warmer months). In training mode, the water can be temporarily stopped from draining so there is always water in the bowl.
