How The Automatic Waterers Work Without Electricity to Heat the Water
Bar-Bar-A Horse and Livestock Drinkers work like a frost-free hydrant but designed for animals. Pushing on the paddle the animal receives and drinks water. After finishing drinking the remaining water drains back into the ground leaving an empty bowl. This means that there is no water left behind to freeze in the winter, get hot in the summer, and grow algae or mosquito eggs. With no mosquito attraction, West Nile and Zika Virus can be limited and the standing water which becomes the breeding ground for rodents, birds, and disease is not an issue. The Automatic Waterers are Self-Cleaning
With no standing water the opportunity for algae to grow is non-existent. This means there is no weekly cleaning associated with this product.Water Temperature Just Right- All Year Long
In the summer the water comes up cooler and in the winter it is warmer because the water in the waterline is buried in the ground. Clean water at the right temperature is pleasing for animals to drink. This means more water consumption and results in healthier animals. How Many Animals Need to Drink to Keep the Automatic Waterers From Freezing?
Unlike similar products the Bar-Bar-A does not need any animals drinking from it to keep it from freezing. The unit can handle just 1 animal or up to 25 head enjoying the fresh clean drinking water.

Regarding the “paddle” in the schematic that opens and closes the supply line, is it reliable to fully close the supply valve when an animal is no longer drinking? This reason I ask is my supply line comes from a livestock pond and if left open would eventually drain my pond during dry times if left open indefinitely.
Thank you,
Chris
David Anderson says
Chris, any mechanical unit with water has a chance of malfunction. Pond water makes things mechanical even more difficult because the water has all kinds of debris in it. You should be able to add a filter to your water line that will take those risks out of the equation. Please call our tech hot line at 800-451-2230. Thanks. Bar-Bar-A

Hello, we had 2 drinkers installed last year. These are the best, no worties about fresh water for my horses. We just got a couple of rescue goats and I want to train them to drink out of the drinkers too. Do you have any tips? The horses took to the drinkers easily, will the goats too?
David Anderson says
The goats will learn quickly and if there is a problem you make put the unit in training mode when in the spring, summer, and fall and there will always be water in the bowl to entice them to search to the bottom of the bowl for it. Thanks.
David Anderson says
Please look in your email inbox. We have sent the information. Thanks.

What is cost for one suitable for sheep?

Any issues with the paddle freezing because of getting wet and being difficult to push down?
David Anderson says
No, we have a guard that protects that from happening. Thanks.
David Anderson says
459.00
Margine Henry says
What guard? Maybe that is what I need. Paddle is too hard to push down & metal gets way to hot for horse to want to use it.
David Anderson says
You may call our tech person and they will give you some good ideas on how to handle this situation. 800-451-2230

I am located in Alberta Canada. It gets quite cold here. We have long winters. Last year we were at -55°C. Is this unit able to handle those temperatures over a longer period of time? Can you send me some information to my email please. Tatjana.boxhorn@gmail.com. Thanks
David Anderson says
Thanks for your note. The paddles are made of aluminum which does not carry the heat like steel. They do still get warm to the hairless human hand. Horses skin is 8 times as thick as humans and they have hair covering their chin which is the part of the horse that activates the unit. You may want to call our tech line for help on the making the paddle easier to push down. Thanks.
David Anderson says
If you bury your lines deeper than 7 feet you will need to use some electricity a few weeks out of the year. 6 feet and less you are fine without electricity. Thanks.
Caroline says
Tanja, Did you you buy one of these? I am looking at one, but I too live in Alberta close to Edmonton. Wondering if it held up?

John says
How do you set it to “training mode”?
John says
How do you put the waterer in training mode as discussed on the website?
BarBarA says
Take the drain valve out and replace it with a 1/2 inch pvc plug fitting. If you need additional help you can go to the website and there is a video on changing the drain valve or call us. Thanks.
BarBarA says
